Gordon Buchanan, a wildlife photographer, and his BBC team headed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the hopes of having some one-of-a-kind experiences with endangered silverback gorillas. Nonetheless, none of them could have imagined such a spectacular sighting. The filmmakers captured an unintentional moment that demonstrates how protective these gorgeous animals are of their family!

When the team saw the once-in-a-lifetime moment, they were in the Kahuzi-Biega National Park. They were driving through the forest with their cameras set up when a big silverback gorilla emerged from the undergrowth. Everyone was ecstatic at such a sight, but they had no clue what the big ape was preparing.

However, as soon as the massive guy reaches the center of the road, he stuns there, full of confidence, despite the fact that he is being seen by so many people. Even a fully loaded truck barreling towards him doesn’t appear to bother him in the least. This is his domain. Then, with the family’s head of household ensuring that the road is secure, the entire family, from moms to children, casually crosses across, with the courageous male being the last to emerge from the bushes on the other side of the road.

The silverback gorillas, like most of the apes, are overprotective when comes to their families. They are all ready to protect their babies, even with their own lives, if necessary.

“Mothers are very protective of their children; many have paid the ultimate price to shield their kids from poachers,” according to the Gorilla Highlands website. “Because children learn so much from their mothers and other troop members, reintroducing young rescued gorillas into the wild is extremely challenging.”
