About a month ago, Redditor carefree_dude’s wife found an injured baby squirrel on the side of the road twitching, most likely hit by a car. The poor wild animal had major head trauma and couldn’t do anything, so the family reached out to a wildlife rehabilitator.
After six days of medicine, Mitten, the cute squirrel, felt a lot better, he was able to hold food, though he still needed help drinking and couldn’t walk very well. His recovery was nothing short of a Christmas miracle. “We are still caring for him, though he will likely never be able to be rereleased, wrote the Redditor. “He may not be able to live a wild life, but if he continues to recover, we can help him live a good life as a pet squirrel.”
Mitten is the second adorable squirrel the family has saved: “We would love to run a wildlife rehabilitation center someday. We are building a 5ft by 3ft by 8ft enclosure for him, which I hope to put a small living tree in.” For now, the cute animal loves hanging out in the family’s Christmas tree.

“He couldn’t eat, drink, [or] walk. We were eventually able to get him to drink via a syringe”
“He often keeps his head to the side”
The family may never be able to release him back into the wild, so now he’s living in their Christmas tree!
