When Jacks Anderson and her wife stopped for lunch at a fried chicken stall a few days earlier, she sensed they were being watched.

Poppy, a giant black pittie, sat on the pavement under the counter’s barstools, watching them eat.

“She never took her gaze away from us,” Anderson told The Dodo, “yet she didn’t approach us or ask for food.” “The stand’s proprietors came out and shooed her along the sidewalk. She was clearly terrified, and she vanished.”

On their way home after lunch, the couple saw the dog again. They spotted the pittie’s huge, pregnant tummy this time and decided they had to do something to aid her.

“My wife took the leftovers, and I walked over to her and placed them on the table for her,” Anderson explained. “She was nervous, but we could see some of her scars, so I understood why she didn’t want to take a chance.”

Anderson and her wife worked hard to gain the trust of the anxious dog and ultimately persuaded her to eat from their hands. They lifted the large dog and loaded her into the car at that point.

Poppy was relieved to be in a safe and secure environment.

“We just sort of halted at that point to let Poppy to settle down a little bit,” Anderson explained, “but honestly, she was way more peaceful than I imagined.”

“As I began to shoot the footage of my wife soothing her, I saw Poppy’s eyes were welling up with tears. I’ve never seen it in a dog before, and it definitely made an impression.”

Anderson and her wife drove Poppy to their local vet’s office, where the dog was treated for fleas and worms. Luckily, Poppy was relatively healthy and was released back into Anderson’s care.

“Poppy spent her first couple of days with us just one on one,” Anderson said. “She slept nearly all the time and acclimated to the couch pretty quickly. In the last day or two, she’s become far more active, showing interest in the other dogs and following me around instead of sleeping.”

Poppy is a sponge for loves and pets, absorbing up all of the affection she can receive from her owners.

“Poppy is the type of dog who craves affection,” Anderson explained.
