When this sweet puppy named Ava came at the Hoke County Animal Shelter in North Carolina, she was depressed. Her previous owner had relinquished her. The only life she’d ever known had ended abruptly.
Ava was upset, and it was obvious.
But, in a fortuitous turn of events, her circumstances improved. Ava’s spirit vanished in the same instant.
Kristi Pylant, who works at the shelter, was there the day that Ava arrived. She tried her best to ease Ava’s fears.
“She was absolutely terrified and sad, understandably,” Pylant told The Dodo. “After spending time with her, we became buddies.”
Ava’s broken heart began to mend, thanks to the patience shown to her by shelter staff. Little did Ava know, however, that her happy ending was right around the corner.
Earlier this month, a shelter visitor encountered Ava and chose to give her what she needed most: a permanent home with people who would adore her for the rest of her life.
Ava’s fortunes had improved. And she appeared to understand it fully.
Pylant, who had welcomed the previously sorrowful dogs into the shelter, was present as an elated Ava prepared to leave.
Ava, who was now all smiles, even halted to say “thank you” to Pylant, extending her paw in gratitude for all the affection she had received:
“It was incredibly lovely of her to offer me her paw when she was getting adopted,” said Pylant.
Though surrendering to the shelter may have felt like the end of the road for Ava, it was actually only a pit stop on the route to a happy new beginning, made possible by Pylant and her employees, and, of course, Ava’s new family.
Even if Ava didn’t, they all knew that the best was yet to come.
