Up until he met McGee, a duck living alone in the pond behind Evan Hastings’ house.
With a huge heart and a lovely disposition, the beautiful 6-year-old canine doesn’t seem to mind that his feathery companion is a touch overbearing.
“He’s a wonderful friendly dog with not a mean bone in his body,” Hastings told The Dodo. “I think the duck just got lonely and started harassing McGee and then they became best buddies.”
The duck, nicknamed Daffy, now spends his days soaking up the sun with McGee. Daffy is constantly trying to get McGee’s attention and the dog is incredibly patient. He even shares his food with Daffy every morning and they eat from the same bowl.
Hastings said, “McGee will be lying in the grass throughout the day and the duck will be lying on his back as well.” After a while, I believe McGee becomes irritated by the duck’s constant pecking at him for no apparent reason.
Daffy seldom leaves McGee’s side, and the two frequently go swimming together in the evenings. Daffy enjoys diving into the pond, going for a swim, and then riding McGee out of the water. On his back, McGee seemed to love “retrieving” Daffy just as much.
“When they swim together the duck is always trying to get on his back,” Hastings said. “Sometimes when he’s up there, he’ll hold his wings straight out — it’s hilarious.”
