After The Hurricane A Lost Rooster Appears To Popeyes And Refuses To Go

Latoya Giles was waiting in the drive-thru of a Popeyes in South Louisiana in early March when someone strange cut in line. A rooster crossed in front of her automobile and continued heading to the restaurant’s front door.

Giles had heard about the rooster from her coworkers at the hospital across the street, where she works as a traveling nurse. But it wasn’t until she saw him with her own eyes that she believed a live rooster had taken up home in the Slidell Popeyes parking lot.

“As I approached the drive-thru [window], a rooster walked in front of my car, so I put on my brake,” Giles explained. “Then he went to the door and remained there, as though looking in.”

Giles knew that nobody would believe her without proof, so she started snapping photos of the rooster as he stood at the restaurant entrance, waiting for someone to open the door.

As Giles drove out of the Popeyes parking lot, she noticed something else strange — a chicken coop.

The strange rooster appeared at Popeyes in September, right after Hurricane Ida, and refused to go, according to staff. They attempted to locate the rooster’s owner, but when no one claimed him, the employees tenderly adopted him and called him Rocco.

Rocco has become a mascot for the branch, where personnel feed and care for him on a regular basis and even constructed him his own coop. Rocco may have picked an unusual family, but he appears to be satisfied.

“He’s lovely and healthy,” Giles added. “They’re clearly looking after him.”

Giles is now welcomed every morning on her approach to work by the sight of Rocco parading around the parking lot, assessing his domain. And Rocco’s popularity is growing.

“Things have clearly improved in business, “Giles stated. “”Everyone is eager to see the chicken.”
