After his mother rejected him, Zhuang-zhuang, a young baby elephant, cried nonstop for five hours. When the baby boy was born at the Shendiashan Wild Animal Nature Reserve in China, his mother accidentally stepped on him. Veterinarians hoped it was an accident.
Due of his wounds, Zhuang-zhuang had to be segregated. He was once again attacked by members of the tribe who had freed him in the hopes that her mother’s actions were an accident.
Sadly he had to be separated to protect him, and since then the guardian who saved him from his mother in the animal reserve adopted him.
A zoo employee told Metro UK :
“The little boy was very sad and he was crying for five hours before I could comfort him, he couldn’t bear to be separated from his mother and it was his mother who was trying to kill him.”
A park representative continued:
We don’t sure why the mother took it out on her calf, but they have a strong attachment, and we couldn’t take a chance.
The reaction that the mother had with the baby elephant is an effect of life in captivity, since the protective instincts of animals become altered when they live outside their traditional habitat.
Fortunately, the Shendioshan Wildlife Reserve had a group of individuals who provided the newborn elephant with the love and care he needed to live. He now enjoys a healthy and happy life.
