Erica Laurenzi was watching her dog Stella play with something that didn’t appear to be a toy when they were on their 250 acres of land in Maine with their other dog. She hurriedly rushed to look inside it and was astonished to see Stella had discovered an egg.

Laurenzi wasn’t really sure what sort of egg Stella had discovered at first sight. Even though it was unclear, she and her boyfriend made an effort to locate the egg’s family in the hopes of returning it to its original home.

“Amazed that they didn’t manage to break it, we went searching for a nest,” Laurenzi told The Dodo. “After an hour, there was no luck. I am the biggest believer in returning it to the mother if the opportunity is there.”

Since she couldn’t locate a nest, Laurenzi took the egg home with her instead. She’s rehabbed birds before, so she had at least a little knowledge on the matter and quickly got to researching how to best care for the mystery egg.

I’ve reared a lot of robins and sparrows, but I’ve never taken care of and hatched an egg, said Laurenzi. “The Googling began right away… I was certain it was an egg but unsure of what sort it was. Due to previous sightings of turkeys feeding on the area, we had thought it was a turkey.

The egg appeared to be a real match, which was subsequently validated by a Google search. In order to discover the Rolls Royce of incubators, I placed the egg in my sports bra and drove to Tractor Supply. Nothing less than the greatest will offer this egg the best chance of surviving.

Laurenzi got the egg all settled into the incubator, and there it sat for 25 days. She did extensive research and cared for it as best she could, and on the morning of her birthday, it finally started to hatch. As the little turkey prepared to hatch, Stella watched and waited.

She was so proud of the egg she had found and wanted to help her mom welcome the baby turkey into the world.

“The morning it began to hatch, you could tell she knew something was happening,” Laurenzi said. “We had the incubator up high on our kitchen counter out of the reach of any potential threats.

By the end of the day, her and I sat side by side on our counter stools as it picked away at its egg shell. She watched intently all night long as it dried off and got its bearings.”

When the small turkey eventually joined the world, Laurenzi and Stella were equally enthralled. Even though they had anticipated it, they were nonetheless in awe when the turkey eventually hatched after everything he had gone through prior to his birth.

After conducting extensive study on eggs, Laurenzi stated, “We were quite certain that it was a turkey, but we were still as shocked and astounded that whatever that small bird required was within an egg we looked at for over a month.”

The young turkey is doing really well at this point, around a week old. He defied all expectations, and his adoptive family is now determined to provide him the greatest life imaginable.

Our off-grid cottage rental enterprise, Lost Mile Organic, which we want to debut next spring, will have it as its mascot, Laurenzi added. “We are hoping to keep it (at our site in Maine).

Since the egg was discovered there, “we hope to gradually release it to its native environment once it is robust and self-sufficient enough, but provide it with a very lush cage that it may come to and go at its leisure during the day and be safeguarded in at night.”

Even though Stella loves her tiny turkey pal, the two have mainly only observed one another from a distance. Since they intend to release the turkey back into the wild, they don’t want him to assume that all dogs or other fuzzy wild creatures are his pals, which may endanger his safety. Even so, Stella enjoyed being a part of the turkey’s conception and enjoys seeing him develop even more.

According to Laurenzi, “Stella does go in and peer over the side of the brooder to check on her tiny companion, exchanging looks and little chirps.”

When Stella discovered a surprise egg, Laurenzi had no idea what to anticipate, and everyone is very grateful that everything turned out as it did. The turkey will now have all the room he needs to develop, and they are eager to release him back into the wild, where he belongs.
