Two Californian women had planned to see a humpback whale up close, but they ended up with far more than they anticipated. They will always remember the amazing event that was just a few feet away from being their worst nightmare!
Julie McSorley and her friend Liz Cottriel were kayaking off Avila Beach when they just engulfed into a humpback whale’s mouth.
But it all happened so fast, they didn’t even noticed, because the massive mammal spat them back out. The incredible moment was captured on camera by one of the women and by some other whale watchers.
I was aware that it would be pretty close, but once again, I had previously witnessed whales breaching right next to kayaks. My first thought was that this was going to be really great, said Julia McSorley. But then, all of a sudden, the boat lifted up, and we were very suddenly dropped into the sea.
In the dramatic video, the two ladies are seen paddling in the bay while the whales are engaged in a feeding frenzy. Suddenly, a big bank of fish can be seen breaking the surface of the water in front of them.
Before they even realized it, a ravenous whale came very close to swallowing the two companions. In a split second, the big beast sucked them into its jaws and spewed them out.
Fortunately, the two ladies were both able to get up onto the kayak by themselves, and they quickly swam to the beach while the other kayakers and paddle boarders came to aid. They simply couldn’t believe they were still alive after they arrived on dry land. Fortunately, nobody of them was hurt. Only the car key was misplaced throughout their horrific experience.
When they returned to the car, Cottriel said, “I was shaking my shirt and a bunch of fish came out of my shirt.” We didn’t believe we were that near, but we were unquestionably in the spot where we shouldn’t have been, so I’ve certainly learnt my lesson.
