The house Brian Markham and his wife share had an unexpected visitor move in one day last year. In the couple’s bathroom, the visitor set up shop next to a plant on a windowsill.
A small spider was it. Tiny, but not without lofty goals that weren’t ignored.
Markham hardly batted an eye when he saw the wee arachnid in that cozy nook. Instead, his presence was something Markham appreciated. Each bug caught in the spider’s web was one less pest flying around the house.
And the spider was clearly good at his job. But unfortunately, not everyone saw things that way.
“[My wife] has a strong dislike of spiders and was insisting I get rid of it. I insisted that he was a teeny-tiny guy that posed no threat whatsoever,” Markham said.
Markham made the decision to go formal after realizing that words alone could only go so far in defending the spider.
Instead of murdering him, I chose to make him “Employee of the Month,” reasoning that the prestigious title would shield him from the lady’s wrath.
Even a little certificate with the name Manspider on it was printed by Markham for the little fellow. After all, Markham thought of him as a sort of eight-legged superman.
Markham then hung the tiny certificate up in Manspider’s office, proudly for all to see.
And sure enough, that did the trick.
Markham’s wife changed her mind after seeing the excellence medal displayed next to Manspider’s web.
After that, Markham claimed, “She didn’t ask me to get rid of him.”
Manspider was ultimately able to maintain his employment because to that employee award. But it’s clear that he had higher aspirations than just the windowsill perch in the restroom.
The diligent spider remained in that posture for several months before just getting up and leaving.
He suddenly disappeared, according to Markham.
One thing is certain, though: whoever’s home Manspider may have gone on to is lucky to have him. It’s unclear where Manspider has ended up since then.
