Fox Invades Home And Steals Cat’s Bed

One morning last week, Meloney Blazye had just gotten out of bed for work when she saw something in her cat’s bed that most definitely was not the cat. She had wandered into the bathroom to brush her teeth.

I observed these very enormous ears as I was walking through the kitchen, Blazye said. I walked back to take another look while having one foot in the hallway and the other in the restroom. Undoubtedly, those weren’t cat ears!

They belonged to a fox that had entered via an unlocked window and stolen Blazye’s cat’s place in the cat bed while the cat was outdoors in the garden.

“I looked at him and he looked at me,” Blazye said. “He was not frightened of me at all.”

Unsure what to do, Blazye tried to think who she could possibly call to safely evict her early-morning houseguest. At that moment, Blazye’s cat, George, sprang in through the bathroom window and started hissing at the fox, as he clearly wasn’t ready to share his bed with anyone else.

“The fox didn’t take any notice,” Blazye said. “He was acting like another member of the family who had been there for years and was confused about what all the fuss was about.”

Seeing how calm the fox was — and that he showed no signs of mange or sickness — Blazye decided to tap on the bed to see if it would prompt him to leave. She then tipped the bed up, but the fox held onto it for as long as he could, until finally jumping back out through the window.

“If I had not shut the window after that, he would have came back in for sure,” Blazye said. “He didn’t want to be outside — I think he was cold. After that, he was at the window looking in at the cat and I for a few minutes before going on his way.”

While Blazye spotted the same fox taking shelter under a neighbor’s deck a few days later, he hasn’t tried to come back in since that morning.

“The whole thing really blew me away,” Blazye said. “I have never been eye-to-eye with a wild animal like that — he was amazing to look at so close.”
