K8m14, a TikTok user, had a nice encounter with one of the Middle East’s cutest people on a hot day in a sweltering desert.
It was a jerboa, a little, jumping mouse, and she came bearing a modest request. She was obviously thirsty.
According to K8m14, the temperature that day reached a sizzling 107 degrees Fahrenheit, so it might not seem surprising that the little jerboa was in search of a refreshment.
But interestingly, this may very well have been the first sip of water she’s ever taken.
It turns out that jerboas are so adapted to living in the dry parts of Asia and north Africa where they are found that they can usually meet all of their water needs exclusively through the food they consume.
The jerboa mostly forages at night and consumes plants, seeds, and insects in order to satisfy its thirst for water, according to Jay Sharp of DesertUSA. It might never really sip unpaid water in its entire life.
But jerboas are known to drink water when it is offered to them. The thirsty jerboa K8m14 encountered that day perhaps left completely satisfied after discovering a source of transportable water in the desert along with some human goodwill.
