After an aggressive guest decided to come by and take advantage of the unoccupied vehicle this week, one automobile owner in Colorado learnt a good lesson about maintaining property security.

It’s likely that the owner wasn’t happy with how he left things.

In an effort to raise awareness, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office wrote about the tragic not-all-that-unusual bear event.

In addition to making it easier for criminals to steal stuff, leaving your car unlocked also makes it simpler for bears to enter and establish a home, as we’ve already witnessed twice in the last week, according to officials’ online warnings.

This particular bear’s escape was everything but easy. He climbed inside the car and helped himself to some goodies the owner had left and closed the door behind him by accident. He apparently fell asleep after failing to flee.

The responding police had to set him loose. They opened the car’s door using a rope, as shown in this video.

Afterward, the interior of the vehicle didn’t look pretty, so the owner has good reason to be upset. But the outcome isn’t so great for the bear, either. Now that he knows how good human food tastes, he may be tempted to try again — and that could lead to a conflict that doesn’t end so peacefully for him.

Thankfully, in this case, the sheriff’s office said “no humans or bears were injured,” adding:

“Please be safe and lock your cars.”
