Rescue Squirrel Can’t Wait To Open Her Gift

After her family’s nest was damaged by adjacent construction, Thumbelina was orphaned and taken in by wildlife rehabbers when she was a little baby. They planned to raise her and then release her back into the wild. Unfortunately, it became evident after a while that Thumbelina would not be able to live securely in the wild on her own, at least not anytime soon, due to several developmental and health difficulties.

“Release is never out of the question,” her family wrote on her website, “but for now, she has a long way to go.”

Thumbelina is content to stay indoors with her family for the time being. They take excellent care of her and make certain that she is surrounded by her favorite items at all times.

Thumbelina’s favorite things are her pink doughnut bed, wet paper towels, her small plush animals, and, of course, avocados. Avocados are Thumbelina’s favorite fruit.

This past Christmas, Thumbelina got all sorts of presents. She loved opening every single one, but her family knew that her final present was going to be her favorite. When they handed it to her, all wrapped up, she got so excited and couldn’t wait to tear it open and find out what was inside.

Thumbelina frantically began tearing open her special present …

…and she was ecstatic when she eventually figured out what it was.

An avocado, to be precise.

“She was stunned for a while, then her eyes brightened up and [she] delved in,” Thumbelina’s mother, Christina, told The Dodo. “She’s only permitted a small amount at a time, but since it was Christmas and Santa wanted her to have it, she got a few more nibbles before we put it away to keep for later.”

Thumbelina could not have imagined a more perfect present than an avocado. It’s her favorite treat, and she’s fortunate because she gets them all of the time, not just on special occasions.

Perhaps one day Thumbelina will be able to return to the wild. For the time being, she’s happy to be inside with her family, running about, making mischief, and eating avocados.
