Leroy has spent more than seven years residing at Dog Tales Rescue. The 12-year-old shepherd mix has been without a forever home for more than half of his existence. Fortunately, rescue groups provide each dog the opportunity to escape, even if it’s just for a pleasant weekend away.

Leroy’s time came recently, and it was a weekend he won’t soon forget.

A waterfront property with a cottage was offered to our staff and volunteers to use to bring shelter dogs for a break from shelter life,” Stephanie Munro, Dog Tales Rescue volunteer, told The Dodo. “This was a wonderful opportunity to give our dogs a break and see how they truly are in a home environment. It really was extraordinary and heartwarming to be able to see our dogs in such a way.”

Munro and Leroy spent time enjoying the scenery, eating good food and sniffing everything in sight. The getaway also marks the first time Leroy had a bed of his very own.

Will Leroy ever find his forever family?

Leroy returned to his routine at the rescue after the enjoyable weekend away, but he had undoubtedly formed many new memories to take the place of those from his time spent in the shelter.

Leroy came to us in 2015 from a Miami shelter that was overflowing with animals after being discovered as a stray, according to Munro. He is quite relaxed back. Leroy does like to play fetch every once in a while, and he also likes to eat. Giving his paw is one of his favorite behaviors, and he does it with enthusiasm. He has big paws.

Leroy is a senior dog who is looking for a home. He occasionally loves head and neck scratching, but only after he has warmed up, so he will need an adopter that respects his needs and boundaries. According to Munro, adopting this kind boy requires several trips to Dog Tales to ensure a suitable match.

“Having now worked with these dogs in the shelter and now having seen them in a home environment, it gives me so much hope for our dogs,” Munro said.

“This experience brought me to tears a number of times seeing how amazing these dogs would be living in a home and feeling devastated at the same time, watching them be looked over time and time again.”

After so much joy spent at the cottage, Leroy would love to find his forever family. Then he can enjoy the scenery, eat good food and sniff everything in sight — with his new favorite people.
