Since she is such a gregarious dog, Potato loves nothing more than to greet each and every resident of her neighborhood on a regular basis.

Potato’s father, Cee, who requested that their last name not be used, told The Dodo that her disposition was similar to a door greeter at a grocery store.

Ever since she was 6 months old, Potato has always loved spending all day outside in the front yard, waiting for people to come by and pet her. It was her favorite hobby — until the pandemic started, and people were suddenly worried that Potato’s family wouldn’t want anyone petting her anymore.

Potato’s parents wanted to find a way to let everyone in the neighborhood know that it was OK to keep giving her love and attention, so they decided to make a sign.

We wanted to tell folks that petting her was acceptable, Cee added. Additionally, the unexpected lack of attention was making her melancholy. She began barking at familiar faces who had previously petted her but had stopped. Additionally, we reasoned that it would be a wonderful opportunity to meet our neighbors and make folks feel a bit less alone at this peculiar time.

The ideal introduction sign for Potato, something sweet and amiable that showed off her personality, was carefully crafted by her parents. They displayed it on the fence in front of their home, which caused people to fall even more in love with Potato than they already had.

Since the pandemic, it seems a lot more people are out and about taking walks where they live, trying to find ways to still get outside. Potato’s sign is such a cute thing to see, and has definitely brought many people so much joy.

“I first met Potato walking with my girlfriend in our neighborhood,” Sean Carr, one of Potato’s neighbors, told The Dodo. “With COVID my photography business was basically shut down, and she was working from home. We’d walk around looking at houses and all of the flowers and plants. One day we noticed the sign and that sweet little Potato. We’ve probably gone by at least once a week since to see if Potato is out.”

She couldn’t be happier with the increased attention that Sweet Potato has received as a result of the placard. She enjoys saying hello to her followers every day, and her family is overjoyed to see her so content.

On exceptionally good days, people have been lining up six feet apart, according to Cee. “We’re debating purchasing those spacer rings for the sidewalk’s ground. When she is inside and someone calls her name in the yard, she frantically rings her doorbell to go so she won’t miss them. She spends the entire day outside, from 10 a.m. until sunset, if it’s a lovely day, it isn’t raining, and we are home.

The pandemic has meant a lot of people are home more, and of course Potato loves spending time inside with her family too — but she has a responsibility to her fans, and she’ll never ignore that.

“She prefers being [with] her fans over her family,” Cee said.
