A little octopus that was recently found in the depths of the ocean is so adorable that scientists want to name it “Adorabilis”—a name that would be entirely appropriate given how this mollusk appears.

The researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California were considering what to call the unnamed marine organism because it can survive at depths of up to 1,476 feet.

The choice, though, could be simpler than they initially anticipated since, as you can see from this gorgeous creature, it is the cutest octopus in the entire world. So what could be more fitting than Adorabilis?

The little pink species is now referred to as the flapjack octopus, but researcher Stephanie Bush of the Monterey Bay Institute wants it to be named Opisthotheusis Adorabilis.

Bush is not the only one who finds the small creature attractive; several of her coworkers agree with her. People fell in love with the newly discovered octopus as soon as pictures of it started to circulate online, and many of them had the same opinions about its naming as the researchers who discovered it.

With its large puppy eyes, its bright color and its little wing-like fins on the head, Adorabilis looks straight out of a fairytale. I am so sure it will soon become a sweet cartoon character!

“I thought that since this animal is so adorable, I should name it Adorabilis,” Stephanie Bush said. “I’m supposed to be this really serious stoic scientist, but I’m still human. It’s just so cute.”

The adorable octopus has a small body that can expand to a diameter of up to 7 inches, making it little bigger than a man’s hand. Although the species was initially discovered in 1990, Dr. Bush is the first to attempt to set it apart from other octopus species.

One of the simplest things is giving it a name, she said. “We must get several specimens. In essence, there is a lot of counting and measuring.
