In a battle of titans recorded on camera, an enraged mother rhino terrified a herd of 15 elephants.
Despite the elephants’ overwhelming numbers, the mother rhino stayed steady and safeguarded her children before ‘exploding’ and rushing at them, scattering them in a cloud of dust.
When carpenter Martin Meyer was visiting a national park in South Africa, he encountered a mother rhinoceros with her young and filmed the epic fight on film.
Martin, who captured the images, said: ‘A herd of about 15 elephants, consisting of a mother and a few calves and several adult bulls, was approaching and going to cross the path of mother and the baby.
‘When they were approximately 20 meters away, she sprang into a sprint, followed by the baby.’
“After regaining their composure, the elephants collected and lined up side by side, virtually mocking the rhino mama. Some of the young bulls have even been known to eat other young bulls.
More than three minutes of standing followed as the rhino mother and the matriarch stared at each other before the baby rhino snorted and moved across the hill.
Although the length of the mother rhino’s horn is unknown, the longest white rhino may grow to be more than one and a half meters long. A completely grown female African elephant may weigh about two tons, whereas a female white rhino can weigh up to two tons.
