The announcement of the birth of a pair of twin elephants by an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka was fantastic news for wildlife lovers and environmentalists throughout the world.
The two healthy calves’ birth came as an incredibly uncommon occurrence because they are the first twins to be born in the nation in almost 80 years.
At the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the two gorgeous newborn elephants, both male, were born. Both of their parents live at the orphanage: the 25-year-old mother Surangi and the 17-year-old father Pandu.
Despite the exceedingly low likelihood that an elephant female would give birth to twins—less than 1%—both the mother and her offspring are in excellent health.
The mother and the children are both doing well, according to Renuka Bandaranaike, director of the orphanage, who spoke to BBC. The infants are healthy despite their little size.
83 elephants, including the newborn calves, are housed in the Pinnawal orphanage, which is located in a hilly area in the country’s center. The orphanage, which was established in 1975, saved and rehabbed several elephants.
There are said to be 7,500 elephants living in Sri Lanka right now. However, according to the BBC, the last time elephant twins were born was in 1941.
Surangi is at her second pregnancy, after she gave birth to her fist calf, also a male, in 2009. An elephant females can have around four birds during her life.
