Tigers are sociable creatures who want attention, love, and friendship in the same way that people do. Indeed, they may be even more devoted and loyal than many individuals on the planet.

Hubert and Kalisa were one of the most well-known and adored lion couples on the planet. The duo had spent six years together in the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle before being relocated to the Los Angeles Zoo in March 2014. Hubert was born in 1999 at the Lincoln Park Zoo, and Kalisa was born in 1998 at the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, so they were both senior lions when they arrived at the L.A. Zoo. However, their veterinary team had always done their best to provide these four-legged friends with a peaceful and happy life.

Almost immediately after settling in, the two African lions captivated the hearts of both staff and guests with their stunning beauty and remarkable relationship. They were an adoring couple who were always cuddling and nuzzling one other; they were practically inseparable.

Another six years have gone, and it’s time to say our final goodbyes. The normal life expectancy for African lions like Hubert and Kalisa in the wild is 14 years, so it’s safe to say the zoo did a fantastic job caring for the couple and extending their lives. When their time came, however, they had no option but to put these magnificent creatures to sleep due to untreatable health concerns brought on by their advanced age.

The good news was that they might depart this world together and go to lion heaven together.

“Hubert and Kalisa are iconic parts of the L.A. Zoo experience, and their loving relationship has affected our employees and guests,” CEO & Director Denise Verret said in a statement on the L.A. Zoo’s Facebook page.

“It’s been stated that you don’t see Kalisa unless Hubert is nearby,” he said. “So, while it’s heartbreaking to have to say goodbye to this legendary duo, we may find solace in the fact that they went out together.” These lions will go down in history as a wonderful force, and they will be sadly missed.”
