Last month, a group of veterinary students encountered an unanticipated type of hurdle while trekking through a rainforest in Brazil.

An big anaconda was there, crossing the gravel road in front of them, and she wasn’t alone herself.

Antônio Stábile dos Santos, who was among the students who stopped, estimated the female snake to be about 20 feet long. Moving closer, he noticed that there were several other smaller anacondas following her.

Santos later came to learn that those smaller snakes were likely males — hopeful suitors all vying for their much larger counterpart’s romantic attention.

But as you’ll see, she didn’t appear too interested:

It was, to put it mildly, an astonishing sight. But it wasn’t only Santos and the other pupils who had to wait for the snakes to cross.

A lizard had also paused in his tracks on the side of the road, perhaps relieved that the snakes were preoccupied with anything else.

For Santos and the others, who spend their time studying animals, it was a scene they won’t soon forget.

“It’s not everywhere you see something like this — especially not in college,” Santos told Globo News. “It was very unusual.”
