Talian Barros was riding his motorcycle to work in Roraima, Brazil, a few weeks ago when he noticed something in the route ahead of him. He had no idea what it was at first, but it was clearly huge.
Barros told The Dodo, “I assumed it was a piece of wood or a tire.”
It was, however, something considerably more lovely.
As he approached the mysterious obstruction, Barros discovered the startling reality as he paused to get a better look. It turned out to be a massive anaconda rising from the surrounding foliage to cross the road.
He placed his bike in the road to warn other vehicles to halt in case the enormous snake was run over.
“My main worry was for the animal’s safety,” Barros explained. “It was a little reckless [to pull over in the middle of the road], but I don’t regret it.”
Barros signaled others to come to a halt, then stood there watching the anaconda cross the road safely.
After a few majestic moments, the anaconda completed her crossing — disappearing once again into the safety of the brush.
The anaconda was estimated to be about 18 feet long — and, thanks to Barros watching out for her, she was protected from danger to keep on growing still.
Was she an imposing sight? Certainly. But Barros can’t help but feel lucky to have crossed her path.
“I wasn’t scared. In fact, I was euphoric, happy to be humbled by that animal,” he said. “She was beautiful — a gift.”
