Life may be brutal to man’s greatest friend at times, and too many dogs end themselves in shelters. While for some, adoption marks the start of a new chapter, for others, the situation is devastating because the only alternative option is to be put down. I grieve every time I see a dog in a situation like this as a dog lover. However, as much as we wish to rescue these poor creatures, we are sometimes unable to do so.

Kala and Keira, two canines at Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Atlanta, appeared to be doomed. They were on the verge of being killed because no one wanted to adopt them, despite their loving and well-trained nature.

For the par time was running out, so the volunteers from the shelter tried one last attempt to find them a new home. They shared a photo of the pair hugging on Facebook in their desperate attempt to save them.

“I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next, and I won’t be as brave,” they wrote in the caption.

They are successful, as the stunning photograph became viral in a matter of minutes. Kala and Keira’s saviour arrived less than two hours after the photo was shared on Facebook.

The shelter staff said, “There are no words to express how delighted we are that these two best friends are safe and together!”

Thankfully, these two girls are now happily living in their new home. This story couldn’t have had a better ending!
