The Animal Charity of Ohio, a nonprofit humane group, received a call last weekend requesting assistance for a family of dogs. A mother and her two pups were living in squalor when Jane MacMurchy, the nonprofit’s operations director, and a humane agent arrived at the location.
It was clear that the owners were not caring for the dogs, and the little family had learned to depend entirely on each other.
“They were living in terrible conditions,” MacMurchy told The Dodo. “It was a good 6 to 8 inches of debris in a makeshift pen, and [the puppies] were completely unsocialized.”
The owners handed up the 5-month-old puppies, Peaches and Layla, as well as their 7-year-old mother, Lady, to the rescuers, who took the dogs to the shelter right away.
While the canines appeared to be in good health, the puppies lacked confidence and had no notion what to do when their mother wasn’t around to show them. Peaches and Layla hugging each other for comfort in the shelter broke MacMurchy’s heart.
MacMurchy explained, “We were conducting the immunizations and the wellness check, and Mom finished first.” “We were walking her out into our intake area, and the pups were so afraid that they hung on to each other.”
The little family is living together at the shelter, where they’re learning what it means to be safe.
“We give them time multiple times a day to just relax and get some TLC in a quiet room with a staff member so they can learn how to trust,” MacMurchy said. “They do much better when their mother is around, so we work with all three together, as well as individually. It’s a slow process, but they are learning how to be confident on their own.”
Lady is already confident on her own just a few days after her rescue, eager to meet new people and go for walks. The socialization procedure for her two puppies, on the other hand, will take a little longer.
“[Lady] is a wiggle-butt, tail-wagging little darling who is simply eager to receive affection,” MacMurchy added. “The pups haven’t arrived yet.” They embrace love and attention, and when they’re together, they’re bouncy and joyful, counting on each other for their confidence.”
“They’re completely reliant on one another,” MacMurchy said.
When Peaches and Layla are ready to be adopted, they will most likely go to the same family. They will receive embraces not just from one other, but also from their loving family.
