When it comes to lions, their moniker as “lord of the jungle” suggests that they are brave and strong beasts. Even enormous animals like wildebeest or buffalo may be taken down by these groups of hunters working together. However, it turns out that they occasionally face opponents that they are unable to defeat.
The incredible series of photos below shows a whole pride of lions seeking refuge on a tree. What put them up there was nothing of a formidable enemy, but an annoying swarm of flies.
It was quite a sight to see so many lions on one tree. They clung precariously on trees, contentedly enjoying the cool shade while avoiding annoying ground insects that thrived in the lush grass below.
Bobby-Jo Clow, an Australian photographer, was the lucky one who captured this moment. He was on his way to conduct a photography safari in Tanzania’s middle Serengeti when he came upon this lion pride.
“Our guide spotted the pride in the trees and luckily we were able to get close enough to the lions to create some unique images.”
Having a chance to witness and take photos of such a special occasion was definitely a fortune. Bobby-Jo could even get close enough to hear the lions snoring. That was fun taking those pictures, some of them appeared rather clumsy when repositioning. Those big cats could be agile and skillful animals on land. However, they looked quite awkward on the tree as if they would fall to the ground at any moment.
These lions seemed to like this tree with its big horizontal branches as a hideaway. However, there wasn’t enough room for everyone, and the unlucky feline in this case happened to be the pride’s alpha male.
Being a great leader isn’t easy!
