In Michigan City, Indiana, two nude rats were discovered in a dumpster, probably tossed out with the rubbish.
It’s unclear why the sisters were abandoned in this manner, although it’s conceivable they were abandoned because they were female.
Peggy McCoy of Rescued Rat Adoptions, an organization that helps rescue and rehome unwanted pet rats in Indiana, told The Dodo, “A lot of times people would dump the females and retain males.”
“Females are the ones who can get pregnant, and because they can have up to 20 offspring, people will get rid of them,” McCoy said, adding that she has rescued hundreds of rats that had been left outside because they are thought to be self-sufficient. “People believe it is a serious issue.”
The sisters were apprehended and transported to animal control by the city police department.
McCoy contacted and offered to take them off the shelter’s hands, and their destiny hung in the balance.
McCoy took the duo to her rat sanctuary and gave them a larger cage with new wood chips to play in.
It’s rare for the rescue to get nude rats in need of homes; hairless rats are actually rather popular as pets, McCoy added, “because they are distinctive.” “In the rescue, we observe considerably less nude rats than the others.”
McCoy has also noted that both rats are really nice and not at all hostile, making it even more difficult to comprehend why they were abandoned.
McCoy is making up for their misfortune by lavishing care on the sisters while also keeping a tight check on them for a very crucial purpose. It’s conceivable that one or both of them are expecting a child.
McCoy remarked, “You always presume they can be.” “If we can capture a heat cycle, we’ll know they’re not pregnant,” says the doctor, “but that happens every five days.”
“I have to keep an eye on them for three weeks to see whether they’re pregnant and fatten them up a little,” McCoy explained. “They’ll be ready for adoption after that… They’re also such sweethearts.”
And McCoy seemed to be as relieved as the sisters that they have arrived safely at the rescue.
McCoy posted on the rescue’s Facebook page, posing with the freshly rescued rats, “A well-balanced person has a rat on each shoulder.”
“These girls are incredible,” McCoy said. “It makes it more difficult to comprehend why they would be dumped.”
