This it was a wild stallion that stepped up and saved the day, when a young and unexperienced foal struggled to cross a river.

The dramatic moment unfolded at the Tonto National Forest in Arizona, and thankfully one of the rangers witnessed the scene and even caught it on camera.

Thousands of wild horses formerly roamed the biggest national forest in Arizona, but now just a few families of mustangs live there.

So when Park Service volunteer Becky Standridge saw a group of people eating along the Salt River’s banks, he recognized them right once. It was the well-known Champ, a powerful stallion with a vast family.

It was such a quiet sunny afternoon, when the peaceful atmosphere was suddenly interrupted by some noisy neighs coming from the other side of the river. Though, they are pretty territorial animals, horses are pretty peaceful excepting the mating season.

So, even though, the two groups of horses initially ignored each other, the fearless Champ eventually decided to cross the river and investigate.

Only the swift and powerful currents proved too much for an inexperienced foal. The small one was absorbed by the swift river in a matter of seconds, and it appeared that she was doomed. Thankfully, the powerful Champ was on hand to rescue the day.

When the big stallion noticed the little horse was battling to keep her head above water, he approached her and pointed her in the proper way.

He took the distraught foal under his wing and safeguarded her until she reached the safety waters and then the shores on the other side of the river, just like a caring father would.
