Humans outlive the majority of animals! There are certain exceptions, though, and tortoises are one of them. These reptiles, believe it or not, can live to be 100 years old.

So, today, we’re introducing you to an almost two-hundred-year-old gentleman.

Jonathan is a 187-year-old gigantic tortoise who is presently the world’s longest living terrestrial mammal. Jonathan was born in 1832 on the Seychelles’ island of Saint Helena, where he now lives with the governor in the Plantation House.

The most fascinating aspect of this reptile is that it was photographed more than a century ago. Jonathan’s first photograph was shot in 1886. As a result, it’s quite amazing that the passage of time has had no effect on his appearance. The tortoise, by the way, was roughly 54 years old at the time the shot was taken.

Jonathan still has a lot of energy and acts like a kid. Despite all of this, physicians have detected signs of aging. They claim that his senses of sight and smell are deteriorating. As a result, Jonathan follows a fairly stringent diet to stay in shape.

He doesn’t eat enough grass anymore, so Dr. Hollins feeds him special food with additional calories on a weekly basis.

There’s a photo of Jonathan from 1902 that you may compare to his current photo!
