When Leilani Wong, her husband, and their dog stopped at a petrol station in Stockton, California, they were on a road trip.
Wong observed a happy little dog sniffing about her car while waiting for her husband to fill up the tank.
Wong told The Dodo, “I spotted her strolling around the petrol station, and she stopped in front of our car and was just staring at me.” “And I’m pounding my palm against the window, like, ‘Are you seeing this?'” she says. She then began following my husband around the vehicle.”
Outside, it was 105 degrees, and the dog was panting. Wong began asking around the neighborhood if the puppy belonged to anyone, but it soon became clear that the gas station was the favorite disposal for unwanted animals.
The dog refused to stop following Wong, so she gave the pup food and water. The dog seemed so grateful for the small act of kindness that it was clear that she was either severely neglected or homeless.
Wong and her husband named the dog Kaia and decided to bring her along on their road trip until they could find a shelter that would take her.

“The first night, my husband slept in the car with her, and she was simply afraid, nervous, and shy,” Wong recalled. “She would only do one thing: eat.”
Kaia had become entirely devoted to her new parents by the time they returned to Washington. Wong described her as “like a little magnet.”
Wong took her to the vet for a thorough examination and began immunizations in order to prepare her for adoption. Kaia, on the other hand, was getting along so well with Wong’s other dogs that they couldn’t bear giving her up.
Kaia is still unsure how to play with toys or what to do when given a bone or treat months later. But she’s becoming more open every day, demonstrating to her mother what a loving and lively dog she can be.
“At first, her personality was really timid, fearful, unsure of herself, and insecure,” Wong added. “However, her current personality is lovey, cuddling, cuddly, and connected at the hip. You can’t even leave the room because she’ll follow you.”
Wong stated, “I tell people she’s the best dog I’ve ever had.”
