A group of whale watchers hoped for a once-in-a-lifetime sight, only to be epically played by the gigantic whale they had all been waiting to photograph. Thankfully, filmmaker and photographer Eric J Smith captured the amusing event on film, and it has now gone viral.
The marine life lovers carefully waited on their boat with cameras ready, but they almost missed the stunning sight when the giant whale decided to play a prank on them.
The party was waiting for a once-in-a-lifetime chance off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, but they were all gazing in the wrong direction when the whale sprang up behind them.
Animal lovers, on the other hand, were fortunate in that they turned their heads just in time to get some wonderful photos with the magnificent creature.
The humpback whale allowed them another view, just as it had knew the curious sightseers had missed the first opportunity. Some whale watchers even joined in on the celebration this time.
Photographer Eric Smith, who was present for the entire incident, couldn’t believe what he was seeing. “She carefully and quietly raised her head above the water to have a look around,” the 49-year-old explained.
“As soon as everyone turned around, she vanished beneath the water’s surface. There was a lot of clapping and loud laughing.
“I was a few dozen feet away on another panga [boat] and recorded the moment just as everyone realized she was so near.”
Whale photography requires a lot of luck, but the key is to stay awake and ready at all times.”
