When it comes to strange friendships, especially between various animal species, Mother Nature never ceases to astound. Although it’s the furthest thing from anyone’s thoughts, this love story is all about a lion falling in love with a tigress.

Life wasn’t always easy for this odd couple. Cameron, the lion and Zabu, the white tigress was kept in captivity at a zoo in New England with the purpose to bred and give birth to ligers (a combination of white lions and tigers).

Fortunately, they were saved in 2004. At the time, their situation appeared to be rather dire. Zabu had a hereditary defect, whereas Cameron was almost 200 pounds underweight for a man his age. Thanks to the Big Cat Rescue, they are now secure and content with their lives. The rescue organization said on social media, “When Zabu and Cameron were rescued, we erected a big natural cage for the two of them to share as they are completely attached as a couple.

Due to some medical issue, Cameron had to be either neutered or forever separate him by his love. “Because Cameron’s behaviors we had only two choices; separate him from Zabu forever or neuter him,” the rescue said. “The decision was easy!”

The stately lion soon lost his mane, but at least he had the opportunity to joyfully go with his true love. “Cameron’s attitude has significantly improved, and he appears to be much more at ease in the sweltering Florida summers without the additional 15 pounds of fur around his neck. Since he no longer cares about everything that is happening outside his enclosure, he has even grown much more playful, according to the rescue organization.
