Basil the fox was hobbling about in broad daylight and definitely had an injured foot when he was initially discovered. Not wanting to abandon him, the worried bystander reached out to a well-known wildlife rescuer to see if he might assist.

The woman told Dan Martin the location of the fox, which was only three minutes away from Martin’s workplace. Martin soon identified Basil and saw that he was in severe need of assistance, so he approached him with a soft towel. He approached him carefully, attempting to gain his trust, and it took just approximately 20 minutes for Basil to allow Martin to approach him.

Martin posted on his Facebook page, “I gently pointed at his foot repeatedly so he knew what I was there for.” “I gently put the towel over him and picked him up with little fuss after a quick dialogue with him (I was doing all the talking) about what the plan was.”

Martin couldn’t obtain a vet appointment for Basil until the next morning, so he brought the injured fox home with him for the night until he could be inspected. He lavished gifts on Basil and provided him with a comfortable bed, and the next day, Basil awoke in a much better mood, anxious to welcome his new best buddy.

Martin told The Dodo, “He got really affectionate.” “I’m sure he was appreciative for the assistance and all of the sweets he received the night before.”

Martin drove Basil to the veterinarian’s office and sat with him as he waited for his turn. Basil continued to cradle him and offer him affection as they waited, evidently thankful to Martin for rescuing him.

Following an examination, the vet decided that Basil’s injury was most likely caused by a shotgun, and that his leg would have to be amputated. Basil’s amiable demeanor led the vet to believe he had been bred in captivity. Martin was hesitant to leave his new buddy, even though his job was technically finished, and chose to keep him company for a little longer.

“He was so comfortable with me that I chose to stay with him for the hour-and-a-half wait for his operation, which he appeared to enjoy,” Martin explained. “I was even present when he slept off on the surgery table.”

The National Fox Welfare Society took Basil in. His surgery went down without a hitch, and he’s now healing and relaxing while his rescuers work out a long-term strategy for him. Martin has kept a close eye on Basil, and he’ll never forget the cuddles he received from him after he saved his life.

“I’m hoping to see him again,” Martin expressed his desire. “I’ve been keeping track of his improvement on their website, and he’s by far the most attractive fox there.”
