Athena knows how to get attention.
When the sweet stray holds up her food bowl and makes puppy dog eyes at the people passing by, it’s impossible not to stop and give her some love.
Construction workers in Southeast Texas found the 6-year-old German shepherd while walking to a labor site in September. They gave the parched puppy some water and alerted Be Intentional, a local rescue group.
At the vet, an examination revealed that Athena was in rough shape: “She had a harness that was way too small for her that was removed,” Christie Kasko, founder of Be Intentional, told The Dodo. “She had every parasite in her system. She also has one of the worst cases of sarcoptic mange the vet has seen.”
But despite everything, all Athena wants is to snuggle. “She is an absolute doll at the vet hospital,” Kasko said. “They have fallen in love with her.”
While Athena was being treated for multiple infections, she learned that the best way to get love and extra treats was to hold up her bowl whenever one of her carers walked by. No one could resist the gentle dog’s begging — especially, after all she’s been through.
“She gets a lot of love and a lot of food,” Kasko explained. “However, she has discovered that holding her dish with her lovely little face attracts more cuddles.”
Be Intentional teamed up with Sauver Des Chiens German Shepherd Dog Rescue to find Athena a loving foster home where she could adjust to her new life. Athena is gradually learning to trust.
Karen Blanchard of Sauver Des Chiens told The Dodo, “She will be pampered to no end.” “She has to transport an orthopedic bed, an open crate, and a lot of bowls.”
And soon, Athena will be ready to find her forever home. “She will continue healing and transition to a life with love and a family,” Kasko said. “Her life will be forever changed for the better.”
