Also known as the cross fox, the majestic creature has a unique feature because of a rare condition called melanism.

Unlikely albinism, which lacks skin pigmentation, melanism occurs because of the skin’s black pigmentation.

And while most of the animals with this rare condition have totally black fur, in this particular situation things are a little different. Maybe that’s why they’re even more fascinating.

Even though cross foxes are quite difficult to see these days, things used to be very different. These gorgeous beasts formerly roamed North America in large numbers, according to wildlife specialists.

Unfortunately, due to a great demand for their fur around the turn of the twentieth century, they were on the verge of extinction.

The red foxes and the cross foxes have a lot in common. They merely received a bigger tail and, of course, a different color of fur. A long black stripe ran down their back, intersecting another stripe to create a cross over the shoulder, earning them the moniker.

“Our initial contact was strategic; I was focused on how not to upset this wild animal,” said photographer Sam Gaby of Newfoundland, Canada, who came upon the strange species.

“At the same time, I was attempting to reassure him that I was not a danger to him.”

“He was unsure about my presence, each cautious step forward was followed by two steps back, and our first encounter didn’t last long,” Gaby said. “I moved slowly, but by the time I prepared my camera and locked eyes with him, he ran off.”
