Vixey is a feisty young fox who loves to play by her own set of rules. Perhaps it’s just those characteristics that make her bond with a particular group of cats a great fit.
Vixey was just a newborn when she came to England’s Second Chance Animal Rescue Crockenhill (SCAR) in February. Her mother had rejected her.
Vixey had no other option than to ask for help because her mother refused to feed her. The fox cub was taken in by SCAR and bottle-fed until she was strong enough to return to the wild on her own.
But, unlike the other foxes the rescue has taken in over the years, Vixey developed a special bond with the sanctuary’s outdoor cats, becoming the first saved and released fox to maintain a connection with them.
Vixey is about 7 months old now. She’s a wild fox capable of living on her own, but she’s been sighted around the rescue’s stomping grounds since her recent release, not necessarily to say hello to her rescuers, but to grab a meal or two with the cats, who don’t seem to mind.
“I think she has come back because she knows she’s safe with us,” John Ranger, founder of SCAR, told The Dodo. “At the rescue we have around 80 cats living a very free life, so Vixey saw cats very often.”
Oddly enough, Vixey also has always had a taste for feline food, according to Ranger. “We do give her fresh meat, but she likes cat food better,” Ranger said. “She creeps in and then just pounces on the feed in the bowl. The cats don’t bat an eyelid.”
