Winnie came to Charlotte’s Freedom Farm when he was around 6 weeks old when his breeders recognized they couldn’t adequately care for him due to his developmental challenges. His rescuers assumed it was simply his front legs that were underdeveloped when they originally took him in.

They immediately discovered that his sternum had also failed to form properly, implying that his lungs and heart are now unprotected, necessitating significant thoracic reconstructive surgery.

Lauren Edwards of Charlotte’s Freedom Farm told The Dodo, “The major concern right now is I have to limit what he does because he is [at] high danger of anything occurring.”

Poor Winnie used to be able to play with the other dogs at the sanctuary, but they play too rough, and it’s just too risky right now. They felt bad that he was suddenly without any playmates — until Wilma arrived.

Wilma was taken in by Charlotte’s Freedom Farm after she was found wandering all alone outside somewhere. Her rescuers assumed she jumped off of a livestock truck — which definitely fits with her boisterous personality.

“She’s lovely,” Edwards added, “but oh man, she’s feisty.” “If you pick her up, she cries so loudly that they’ll probably hear her across the block.” She’s found out how to get up on the sofa and enjoys it.”

Wilma has strong ideas, and she made one of them very obvious practically as soon as she arrived: she adores Winnie and has designated him as her official best buddy.

“They met right when she came actually and were playing within minutes,” Edwards said. “They see each other and instantly go into play mode — it’s quite cute.”

Wilma interacts with Winnie in a different way than the dogs, making it a little safer for her to do so. Even so, Edwards makes sure she keeps a careful eye on them when they’re playing, and she still needs to put limits in place to keep Winnie safe. However, the limits haven’t deterred them. The two are still the greatest of friends and cherish every moment they have together.

“They hang around outside as well,” Edwards added, “but she’s quite concentrated on searching around for insects.” “When they’re outside, he simply sits and hangs there, watching her.”

Winnie and Wilma may appear to be unusual best friends, but they’re actually made for each other and will hopefully remain pals for a long time – even when Wilma grows to be much, much bigger than Winnie.

“People love seeing them together — and she will be 800+ pounds, so watching him watch her grow will be fun too,” Edwards said.
