A live nest cam is capturing some of the most endearing scenes as one of nature’s most well-known families expands.
Three adult bald eagles—Valor 1 and 2, two males, and Starr, a female—have reestablished their parental roles.
Starr lay three eggs in February, and as of right now, all three have hatched. The three parents are currently taking turns caring for and feeding the young eaglets.
We can follow the family’s development thanks to the Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge, a nonprofit group that, among other things, offers a live broadcast of the nest.
The unconventional trio has been a unit since 2017, but the Valors go back further. Back in 2013, Valor 1 and Valor 2 were competitors before deciding to share the nest.
Prior to Hope leaving the nest in 2017, the Valors shared fatherhood with another female.
These eagles’ unusual family arrangement appears to be successful, and the eaglets benefit from having three separate beaks to feed them. When Starr is not around, the two Valors may occasionally work together to feed. Other times, Starr and a Valor cooperate to feed the eaglets with enthusiasm.
The eaglets will be with their parents for 10 to 12 weeks, at which time they’ll start to fledge, trying to fly out on their own.
There’s pretty much never a dull moment now that the babies have hatched. “They really fill up the nest,” the Stewards rightly wrote.
