Meet North, a brave Alaskan malamute who kept his father safe in the most dangerous of conditions.

A teenage mountaineer was injured and stuck 5,600 feet up Mount Velebit last Saturday. According to The Associated Press, a rescue crew of 27 tried to ascend the mountain range that borders Croatia’s Adriatic Sea coast, but it was made more difficult by harsh weather, ice, and fallen tree boughs.

Fortunately for the hiker, he was accompanied by his canine companion, North. North refused to leave his father as darkness fell and temperatures plummeted, protecting him and keeping him warm until aid arrived.

Hrvatska Gorska Sluba Spaavanja (HGSS) stated on Facebook, “Friendship and affection between man and dog know no bounds.” “North escaped with only minor injuries, but his buddy, a young climber, did not. He knelt by him and warmed him warmly with his body.”

Rescuers arrived about midnight and were able to bring the hiker and his dog medical help the next morning.

Thanks to North’s commitment, his dad made it through the night and down the mountain.

“[North’s] loyalty did not end with the arrival of the rescuers,” the Facebook post continued. “He was one of us, guarding his man for 13 hours. From this example, we can all learn about caring for each other.”

North is now at home, where he can relax and enjoy treats and petting, while his father is expected to make a complete recovery.

The fluffy child is being hailed as a hero, but he was only doing what any buddy would do: making sure his mate arrived home safely.
