Ladislau Alcântara and Rosilene Jansen went out for some exercise during quarantine in April. They had no clue, however, that a simple bike trip would transform their lives forever.
They decided to head back early because the day was hotter than predicted, and they observed a little animal standing alone on the road. The thin brown dachshund didn’t flee as they approached; instead, he gazed back at them, as if pleading for assistance.
“When we learned he had been abandoned and we had bread in the bag, I approached him,” says the narrator “The Dodo spoke with Jansen. “I handed him the bread, and he devoured it.”
When Alcântara and Jansen inquired about the dog, they discovered that the location was a renowned animal dumping ground. Jansen remarked, “I despaired because I didn’t want to leave him there.” “However, there remained still a distance of more than 40 kilometers (25 miles) to go to reach home.”
Alcântara took the fragile puppy out of his hydration bag and placed him inside. Jansen said, “It wasn’t easy.” “I rode alongside him, keeping an eye on his bag to make sure the dog didn’t fall.” Every kilometer seemed like an eternity.”
On a break before reaching home, exhausted, Alcântara turned to Jansen and said, smiling: “Since I have no children, I will have a dog.”
The dog was given the name Rotivi by the couple, but Alcântara likes to call him Pelanka. Finally, they brought him home and gave him a bath and a delicious breakfast, and the pair became closer to Pelanka over time.
The three are now intimately connected.
Pelanka has grown a good weight since then and is now capable of accompanying his parents on all of their travels. Even though he came as a shock, Alcântara and Jansen couldn’t imagine their lives without him.
“He is our constant friend,” Jansen explained. “He is unafraid of other animals of any size.” He is secure in the knowledge that we are always close by.”
