The most priceless moments in life are frequently those that are unanticipated. Kaya, a harbor seal, is a marine mammal kept in captivity, so she probably doesn’t have many opportunities to encounter things that aren’t expected or usual.
She may have been overjoyed because of this when someone unexpectedly paid her a visit recently.
This week, the seal’s keepers at the Oregon Zoo shared video of a butterfly flittering on an underwater glass wall lining Kaya’s enclosure.
Her reaction was priceless — like that of a curious child seeing something for the very first time.

For Kaya, it appeared to be a lovely moment, but this meeting was also tragic in another way. Kaya is at a zoo with a troubling history of animal welfare. Meanwhile, in the wild, seals like her are known for being inquisitive. They explore the huge ocean area they live in, as well as the rare human visitor, but most importantly, they do so independently.
However, because of the butterfly, Kaya at least got a peek of the beauty that exists outside of her tank.
