Wild Turkey Quietly Participates in Arlington National Cemetery’s Funeral Procession

Many noble individuals are laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery (ANC), but many people are unaware that the cemetery is also home to a wide variety of wildlife.

Wildlife is abundant on ANC’s 639 acres, according to a Facebook post from ANC. Deer, squirrels, chipmunks, coyotes, foxes, snakes, various birds, and even wild turkeys are among the fauna that may be found in ANC.

One of those wild turkeys has just developed a nice new pastime: participating in funeral processions.

While this particular turkey enjoys many different activities at the cemetery, like exploring the Tomb of the Unknown and relaxing in the sunshine throughout the grounds, her current favorite activity appears to be watching funeral processions as people pay their respects to the deceased.

The turkey follows the parade in silence because it wants to be courteous. She never interferes with the ceremony; rather, she silently participates in it, and her presence is always a welcome surprise for everyone there.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a turkey has tried to get involved in the goings-on at the cemetery. A few months ago, another turkey was seen hanging out next to a guard as he walked by, completely unfazed. The turkeys are never trying to bother anyone — they just like being involved.

Hopefully the funeral procession turkey will keep participating and cheer everyone on. She is only trying to be courteous in the hopes that others would do the same for her.

If you see her or any other animals in ANC, please remember that this is their home and show them respect for their privacy.
